Custom Design at Scale and Velocity

Over the last few years, Starbucks has been conducting an experiment in doing custom design on an unprecedented scale. Each of its cafes are now being designed as unique spaces by an army of internal interior designers.

With more than 8,000 company owned cafes in the United States alone, this is an enormous undertaking. Zimmerman Weintraub Associates works with Starbucks as an AOR across the United States and Canada on cafe projects. Starbucks internal teams act as the interior designers, and we are the architects for interior build outs, interior renovations, new core and shell buildings, and re-purposing of existing structures into new cafes.

My custom design experience has been crucial in my work as lead technical architect for the team. I mentor and train our staff on how to detail and construct complex interior design elements, work with the Starbucks’ staff to resolve issues and provide guidance to their designers with regards to code compliance and construct-ability, and have helped develop and implement tools and procedures for tracking project progress, increasing profitability of projects, and ensuring high quality and well coordinated construction drawings. I also coordinate design work with our consultants, and act as QA/QC for each project. To date I have been the lead architect on more than 200 Starbucks projects.
